Security and vandalism are common issues in suburban Parks such as this. The introduction of a café pavilion will increase the Park's hours of usage and therefore provide more passive surveillance opportunities.
Recent Park works have now set a palette of materials for materials and lighting throughout the Park. The passive recreation area will continue this materials selection with the aim to reinforce visual cohesion throughout the Park.
The pavilion areas including the cafe, outdoor terraces and water feature(s) are an opportunity to provide differentiation and a unique space with the choice of materials and form. The pavilion's materials are inspired by historical examples in Ryde, such as Banjo Paterson House. The walls are to be clad in sandstone, the roof clad in timber palings. Internal walls are to be clad in white tiles.
The building is orientated to best capture morning and midday sun, whilst the large overhang offers protection from afternoon west facing sun. The large overhangs are designed to allow maximum winter solar penetration. Other ESD principles include the use of recycled timber and stone, modular construction, natural ventilation, rainwater storage and its re-use for flushing of toilets, and local irrigation. Solar powered hot water systems, and photovoltaic cells to produce energy. |
